No mortgages, no debt
The rule that makes the game chaos: there's no safety net. No mortgages, no bank loans, and no playing on below zero.
What happens below zero
Paid rent, tax or a fine and ended up below zero? The clock starts ticking. While you're below zero you can't roll and you can't end your turn.
To get back above zero you sell to the bank: a building for half its cost, a property for half its price (once its country has no buildings). You can also close a deal with another player.
When time runs out
- If selling your properties can cover the debt, a sale screen opens, and you pick what to sell until you're back above zero.
- If even selling everything isn't enough, you're bankrupt and out of the game.
Why no mortgages?
In a game without mortgages there's no player keeping everyone at the table another hour on mortgaged property. Every decision costs you right away, and the game stays fast.
The tip: always keep a cash cushion. One landing on a hotel in New York can cost thousands.
