Money & Chaos

Money & Chaos vs. Monopoly

The idea you know – buy property, collect rent, try to survive – with rules that make the game fast, sharp and merciless.

If you've played Monopoly, you'll feel at home within a minute: roll the dice, buy, build houses and hotels, and wait for someone to land on you. The difference is in the pace and the punishment.

In Money & Chaos there's no way to put off the end: no mortgages and no loans, and whoever drops below zero must sell right away. Turns run on a clock, the airports really pay off, and you build as much as your pocket allows.

What's different

No mortgages

✕Classic Monopoly

You mortgage properties to the bank, and a player can hold on to their properties forever – staying in the game long after it should be over.

✓Money & Chaos

No mortgages at all. Your properties are what keep you alive – and if you need cash, you sell them.

Running out of money

✕Classic Monopoly

Mortgage, sell houses, and drag the end out further and further.

✓Money & Chaos

Below zero? The clock starts: sell to get back above zero, or you're out.

Pace

✕Classic Monopoly

No time limit; a game can take hours.

✓Money & Chaos

Every turn is on a clock: a short time to roll, then a set time for everything else. A 4-player game usually takes less than 30 minutes.

Airports, not railroads

✕Classic Monopoly

Railroads almost never help you win.

✓Money & Chaos

Airports charge higher rent, and owning them all lets you fly from airport to airport – skipping right over other players' hotels.

Public companies

✕Classic Monopoly

Two utilities that barely matter: 4× or 10× the dice.

✓Money & Chaos

3 companies – one more square for other players to land on – and owning all of them collects 20× the dice. Here the companies are a serious asset.

Get out of jail card

✕Classic Monopoly

Worth about 50: it just saves you the fine.

✓Money & Chaos

The only way to get out of jail in the same turn you went in. When a rival is about to land on your hotel – and an owner sitting in jail collects no rent – this card can decide the game.

The start square

✕Classic Monopoly

Collect 200 for passing GO.

✓Money & Chaos

200 for passing Good Speed, and 300 for landing exactly on it.

Building

✕Classic Monopoly

You need the whole set, and you build evenly – one house at a time across the set.

✓Money & Chaos

Here too you need the whole country. But once it's yours, build wherever you like and as much as you like – as long as you have the money.

Why it works

  • Without mortgages there's no player who's "dead but not dead" and keeps everyone at the table for another hour. A bad decision costs you – right away.
  • The clock keeps the pace up: a whole game fits in a lunch break.
  • Airports and unlimited building make moments of real chaos: a flight at the right time right over a rival's hotel, or a whole country filling up with hotels in one turn.
